WebI just ordered a pair of Hifiman R7DX open box on Ebay for under $70, so something like that might also be an option (and leave room for a better mic). I suspect that I won't like them as much as the HE-X4 (disclaimer- I don't actually own the HE-X4, I own the HE400SE, which is basically the same sound with some variations in the build). The tuning is overall well balanced and natural, with good instrument timbre. In terms of the basics, the HE400se definitely checks all the boxes for very strong performance at its price point.
